Kristin Miller: A Digital Portfolio

Project Management.

My Digital Communications business classes emphasized project management as a necessary skill in the business world. Writers, designers, and programmers are frequently involved in entire projects. Learning how to manage them is important. I gained valuable project management and coordination experience in my Capstone I & II courses as well as my Multimedia course. We created work flows, wire frames, outlines, and time lines and communicated effectiveness of projects through evaluation memos, usability testing, and various other metrics.

Each project throughout my college career had to include a preliminary project outline including a timeline, budget, and deliverables. Group communication was crucial and required to complete our digital projects, which were semester-long at times.

Group Leader.

Throughout college, my professors focused heavily on group projects and working in group settings. I have built marketing plans, written business papers, given presentations, and even taken tests in groups. With this great emphasis on group work, I found that I learned a lot about communications, planning, and deadlines.

By my senior year, I realized that I had become a natural leader in most of the groups I was involved in during my time at Lebanon Valley. I noticed that I had been the one to plan when to meet, communicate with all members, drive the group to complete their tasks, and edit the final product.
I am a strong individual worker and found it difficult to work in groups when my professors required it. However, I developed a sense of responsibility in groups to do what was required and allocate work, which then needed to be edited before completion. I took it upon myself to coordinate the projects and encourage team members to "get it done". I also found myself taking on most of the work, though much of this trait was due to my fear that others would not come through. By the end of my college career, I learned to trust reliances on others as well as hold myself accountable to lead communications and deadlines, as this is a natural talent of mine.
