Kristin Miller: A Digital Portfolio

La Vie Online

At the end of the spring semester, 2009, the "La Vie" advisor, Bob Vucic, and staff wanted to create an online presence for La Vie Collegienne or "La Vie" (Lebanon Valley College's newspaper) in order to bring breaking news to the public 24/7, help communicate ideas, feedback, and viewer reactions, and to compliment the print edition with additional information, follow-ups, and other media.

Justin Weaver, a fellow computer science student, created La Vie Online over the summer of 2009. As a staff writer and copy editor with a digital communications background, I volunteered to manage the content for the site.

Online Content Manager
For this role, I took the responsibility of uploading the articles I had copy edited as well as photos and weekly webcast videos La Vie was producing. The site is a blog turned content management system, so I also gained experience with the system as well as tagging the content appropriately to make it searchable. I met with the web designer and advisor frequently to discuss the site's usability and functionality issues.

This position required a 24/7 commitment to the paper and site, in case of breaking news, or technical issues. I also managed communication and coordination of the "La Vie" writing staff, while continuing my copy editing duties, to ensure the deadline for publishing online was in sync with the physical paper.

In addition, I helped La Vie market the new site to fellow students by designing and hanging flyers around campus and by running a table in the student center to create awareness and increase La Vie's number of student readers.

Blogger.
In order to enhance the Web site, the Journalism in the Digital Age class wrote bi-weekly blogs that were featured on the site. My blog was titled "Communications Technology: Our World, Our Generation" and can be read here
